General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (typically abbreviated GATT) functioned as the precursor to the World Trade Organization trading system. GATT was created by the Bretton Woods meetings that took place in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire in 1944, setting out a plan for economic recovering post World War II. This first version of GATT is referred to as "GATT 1947". In 1994, GATT was again updated with new obligations upon its signatories. One of the most significant changes made in GATT (or "GATT 1994") was the creation of the World Trade Organization ( WTO). 75 of the GATT members and the European Communities are the founding members of WTO on 1.1.1995. Other 52 of the GATT members rejoined WTO in the next 2 years (the last is Congo in 1997). After the WTO founding 21 new (non-GATT) members have joined and 28 are currently negotiating their membership. Of the former GATT members only SFR Yugoslavia has not rejoined (and it's already impossible). Since FR Yugoslavia (renamed to Serbia and Montenegro and with membership negotiations later split in two) is not recognised as direct SFRY sucessor state its application is considered a new one, non-GATT. ...more on Wikipedia about "General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade"

The Marrakesh Agreement, signed in Marrakech, Morocco, on April 15, 1994, established the World Trade Organization, which came into being upon its entry into force on January 1, 1995. The Marrakesh Agreement developed out of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, which it includes; but it supplemented it with several other agreements, on such issues as trade in services, sanitary and plant health measures, trade-related aspects of intellectual property, and technical barriers to trade. It also established a new, more efficient and legally binding means of dispute resolution. The various agreements which make up the Marrakesh Agreement combine as an indivisible whole; no entity can be party to any one agreement without being party to them all. It was the culmination of the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations originally launched in 1986. ...more on Wikipedia about "Marrakesh Agreement"

Most favoured nation (MFN, called normal trade relations in the USA) is a status accorded by one nation to another in international trade. Somewhat counterintuitively, it does not confer particular advantages on the receiving nation, but means that the receiving nation will be granted all trade advantages (such as low tariffs) that any third nation also receives. In effect, having MFN status means that one's nation will not be treated worse than anyone else's nation. ...more on Wikipedia about "Most favoured nation"

At the Doha Ministerial Conference in November 2001, Trade Ministers launched the Doha Development Agenda. With this Agenda, WTO Members have placed development issues and the interests of poorer members at the heart of the WTO’s work. The meeting, which took place just two months after the World Trade Center attack, was designed to show the world that economic growth and trade rather than terrorism was the way the world should work together. Held under tight security in the small Gulf state of Qatar, there were few protesters and even fewer lobbyists in attendence. The meeting established four key areas of work: liberalising agricultural markets in rich countries, opening up non-agricultural market access ( NAMA) mainly for industrial goods in developing countries, continuing to press ahead with the services sector liberalisation under the GATS agreements, and working with the so-called "Singapore" issues of investment, competition policy and public procurement (these were removed from the agenda after the Cancun Ministerial Conference in 2003. ...more on Wikipedia about "WTO Ministerial Conference of 2001"
