The Zerg are an alien race in the StarCraft universe. They are similar in appearance and behavior to the Tyranids of Warhammer 40,000 as well as the ' bugs' of Starship Troopers and the Xenomorphs of the Alien movies (in fact the Zerg were referred to as Xenomorphs in an early demo version). They also share many characteristics with the Borg of Star Trek; they roam the galaxy assimilating species they encounter into themselves, and they share a hive mind ruled by the Overmind, much like the Formics from Ender's Game. It is separated into a number of broods that are named after monstrous mythological creatures, predominantly from Norse mythology. Each brood serves a specific purpose and is controlled by a Cerebrate that is physically incapable of disobeying the Overmind. Zerg was originally spelled "Zurg" but the name was changed before StarCraft's release. ...more on Wikipedia about "Zerg"

Zerg Cerebrates are powerful agents of the Zerg Swarm, created by the Zerg Overmind for the purposes of controlling Zerg Broods. They manifest the collective consciousness of the respective broods under their command and are therefore inseperable from the Overmind itself; each one has a "piece of the Overmind" within it, each representing one or more aspects of the Overmind's intelligence. Even so, Cerebrates are independent entities and seem to have developed personalities and unique characteristics over time. There are sub-Cerebrates who serve greater Cerebrates. The Cerebrate is what the player controls in the game if he or she decides to play as the Swarm. ...more on Wikipedia about "Zerg Cerebrate"

Zerging, swarming or goblin tactics describes a tactic, originating in real-time strategy games but used in many different computer games including massive multiplayer online roleplaying games (MMORPGs), that is analogous to the human wave attack in real-world ground warfare, in which overwhelming numbers of troops are sent at the enemy, disregarding tactics or casualties. It gets its name from the zergling rush tactic from StarCraft. A body of players or army involved in zerging is collectively referred to as a zerg, while a player who participates in zerging (is part of the zerg) is often called a Zergling. ...more on Wikipedia about "Zerging"
A Zergling is the first non-worker unit the Zerg are able to build in the real time strategy game, StarCraft, made by Blizzard Entertainment. The Zergling is quick, agile, small, and is most effective when produced en masse. The Zergling only requires one Zerg building beyond the Hatchery to create, has a very low mineral cost, and is produced in packs of two, so it is the ideal unit for early game Zerg. ...more on Wikipedia about "Zergling"
