The banknotes of Zimbabwe were first issued in 1980 after the colony of Rhodesia became independent within the Commonwealth of Nations as the Republic of Zimbabwe. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe took over the functions of the Reserve Bank of Rhodesia, and the Rhodesian dollar was withdrawn and replaced by the Zimbabwean Dollar.
